The game is a singleplayer / co-op sandbox-building game in which a pioneer must construct a base and the environment and dangerous caves explored for resources, which can be mined supported by automatic mining systems. The caves are home for vicious robots, who sometimes make construction hard. The peacefull overworld is designed by hand while the caves are generated in a roguelike fashion. The game is designed as a local co-op experience. Players must not start over each time another player wants to play because the only thing that evolves over time is the world. Each genderless character is equally strong. The small backpack gets dropped if one player leaves the game and can be picked up by any other player. There are different play styles. Caveland does not force players into tasks and therefore gives different types of players the option to enjoy a game together. Peacefull progress can be made at the overworld while a more agressive playstile is best perfomed in the caves. A built-in level editor gives players the option to design and share their own worlds.
Caveland has been in development since summer 2014. It is available in Early Access since spring 2015.
